Name Meanings
Miang's name is translated in many ways. Her name was romanized as Miang in the North American localization, which is basically how it appears in katakana; in Japanese, her name is written as "Mian". However, in Perfect Works, her name is romanized as Myyah.
The Myyah is important, because the way Perfect Works romanizes Elly's name is Elehayym. Spell that backwards and you get Myyahele, the first half being Miang's name.
This is easily interpreted since Miang and Elly are two halves of one whole, and are reflections of each other; even their roles and colorings reflect this.
Niang is also the word for "mother" in a dialect of Chinese.
Miang's last name, Hawwa, is a little easier to decipher. In Islamic lore, Haiwa is the equivalent of Eve, the Mother of Humanity.
Scent
In Perfect Works, the creators gave most of the characters a "scent". Miang's is Contradiction by Calvin Klein. According to Perfect Works, though, the meaning they were going for was "conflict", mentioning the ages which she has betrayed people and manipulated them.
This can be taken literally as the conflict between Miang and the people she possessed; they don't simply disappear. Karen Wong certainly didn't, so why should the others have? I have to wonder if Miang didn't take something with her from each possession?
Also, Fei and the others weren't the only one fighting Deus. Miang was, too. Near the end of the game, it seemed like she might have broken free of her programmed fetters, if the scenario had been dragged out just a little longer. Unfortunately, the game ended and Miang wasn't able to free herself.
Urobolus
Urobolus is a misromanization, as it's actually a reference to Ouroboros, a snake that eats it's own tail and is representative of the cycle of life.
It could be said that Miang began life (by birthing Cain and the Gazel Ministry, the first beings on the planet), wed by merging with Elly, and slayed herself so she could return to Persona, initiating the awakening of Deus.
It is also interesting to note that Ouroboros has a strong connection to the Androgyne. The Androgyne is basically the unity of the male and female principles, a reunion that is a return to completeness. This theme is apparant throughout Xenogears, as with the union of the Contact and Anti-type, as well as the angel statues at Nisan.
Opiomorphus
Considering all of the religious and mythological references in Xenogears, you'd be surprised that the only apparent reference to "Satan" would be the Diablos Conflict, eh? This is simply not true; Solaris' "Perfect Omnigear", Opiomorphus, is actually the reference to the fallen angel. Opiomorphus is another name for "Sammael", and I did a search on Sammael; it turns out to be one of the many names of Satan, aka Lucifer, Morning Star, etc.
You learn something new every day, eh?
