Emeralda is the last party member to join your group, and she joins near the end of the first disc, though she appears a little earlier than that. In fact, the very first reference to her story is in the very beginning of the game! Should you check the back of the music box that Citan shows Fei, you will find the above quote; this is a reference to Emeralda, and her story.

For a good chunk of the story, Emeralda is a mystery and as enigmatic as some of the more interesting characters in the game, but then again, nobody in the battle party is exactly normal. While her part in the epic story that Xenogears is isn't exactly integral to the overall story, she does share with an interesting side story as a supporting character.
